Your PGWP is Expiring in 2026 — Here Are Your 5 Options

It is one of the most stressful moments in a new graduate’s Canadian journey. You finished your program, got your Post-Graduate Work Permit, started building your Canadian life — and now you are watching that expiry date creep closer with no clear plan in place.

I see this situation in my office every single week. The good news is that you almost certainly have more options than you think. The bad news is that these options have strict timelines, and waiting too long can close open doors. Here is a complete, honest breakdown of what you can do.

Most important rule: Do NOT wait until your PGWP expires to take action. Ideally you should be making a decision at least 90 days before your permit expires. Some options below require processing time that can exceed 60 days.

First — Understand Exactly Where You Stand

Before choosing a pathway, you need to know three things:

• Your PGWP expiry date — check your physical permit and your IRCC account.
• Your current CRS score estimate — determines whether Express Entry is realistic right now.
• Your Canadian work experience — how many months of full-time skilled work have you accumulated?

Option 1 — Apply for Permanent Residency Through Express Entry

This is the gold standard outcome. If you have at least one year of Canadian skilled work experience (TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3), meet language requirements, and have your educational credentials assessed, you may already be eligible to create an Express Entry profile and receive an Invitation to Apply for PR.

The current CEC draw cutoff in 2026 is sitting around 515 — the highest it has been this year. If your score is below that, focus on score-improvement strategies before your PGWP expires. If your score is above 480 and climbing, get your profile in the pool immediately.

Option 2 — Apply for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP)

• Timing: Apply before your PGWP expires — do not wait for it to lapse.
• Work Rights: Open work permit — you can work for any employer while waiting.

Option 3 — Employer-Specific Work Permit (Closed Work Permit)

If you have a supportive employer, an employer-specific work permit can extend your legal status in Canada while you continue building your Express Entry profile or pursuing a PNP nomination.

• What You Need: A willing employer is essential — have this conversation early.
• The Trade-Off: Ties you to one employer — less flexibility than an open permit.
• Timing: LMIA processing can take 2–5 months — plan well ahead.

Option 4 — Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Many provinces actively recruit international graduates through dedicated PNP streams. Ontario’s Human Capital Priorities stream, British Columbia’s International Graduate stream, and Alberta’s Advantage Immigration Nominee Program all have pathways specifically designed for recent Canadian graduates.

• Work Rights: You can continue working while IRCC processes your application.
• Important: This is a temporary bridge, not a solution — have a clear plan for what comes next.

What You Should Do This Week

• Step 1: Log in to your IRCC account and check the exact date on your PGWP.
• Step 2: Calculate your approximate CRS score using IRCC’s online tool.
• Step 3: If your PGWP expires within 6 months, book a consultation with an RCIC this week.
• Step 4: Do not apply for anything without advice first — the wrong application can close pathways.
